What on earth is SEO?

Many people believe that If you stuff loads and loads of keywords into your content pages about your particular product and service,  you'll instantly whizz straight up to the top of Google, and be guaranteed to serve in the top 3 of the organic listings. This is somewhat of a myth!

Search engines these days are smart and quite rightly so they only want to display results that are of relevance to the search term entered! If you're the best in the UK at selling tractors, and your site is all about tractors, then you're already on the front foot.

SEO or Search Engine Optimisation is a technique used by web developers to help a website improve its position in natural search. It's a method that's been around since the early 1990's, and was used on some of the first websites that launched! Although best practice SEO guidelines have changed considerably in two decades!

SEO is free right?

Well, kinda ... yeah! Once you've attained the results in search that you wanted, for the keywords you wanted, then any traffic that comes as a result onto your website is in actual fact a 'free click'. However, unless you have the skills and expertise to identify a keyword strategy, then implement this strategy across the website, you will have to pay someone to help with this.

Here are some important considerations

  • Is the traffic that's hitting your website, the right sort of traffic, look at your bounce rates!
  • Is your website doing the best job it possibly can at 'converting' any of those new or returning visitors
  • Are you getting the right messages across and is the content easy enough to find?
  • SEO traffic can take time. PPC traffic is almost instant, how quickly do you want that traffic?
  • Don't get complacent. If Google thinks your website and content is out of date, then that could affect your positions

SEO tip right here . . .

As mentioned above, the best thing you can do to start with is focus on your content and website. I'll use my tractor website example again. If you have a good, well-structured website that talks about how fantastic your tractors are, then that's a great start. Don't overload your webpages with spurious content, keep it real! If Google senses that your site is of good quality and of good relevance, then that's a lot of SEO brownie points sitting right there.
